2011 Sauternes Revisited

Tuesday, January 27th, 2015

Last year many of you will have taken delivery of some 2011 Sauternes so we thought it would be a good idea to see how they are drinking now – superbly as it happens! I also report below on the vintage generally (it’s easy to forget the excellent 2011 Sauternes vintage after the fantastic 2009s and 2010s) and how a panel of UK wine experts found the wines when they were tasted last week at the annual Southwold tasting.

To help you find a particular wine that you may have bought we’ve filmed everything in alphabetical order this time – enjoy the videos!  Bill Blatch

2009 Sauternes Tasting From Bottle – Part 1

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Welcome back to the wonderful 2009 Sauternes vintage.

I’ve just finished tasting all the major Bordeaux wines from 2009 at the legendary annual Southwold tasting – reds and dry whites as well.  The best Sauternes stole the show with only the top Pomerols and Pauillacs keeping them company.

Below is a video summary of the vintage and reports on of some unclassified and Second Growth wines – this really was a vintage in which everyone had a chance to create top quality wines and these represent fantastic value.  If you haven’t yet got any in your cellar then do take a look at our full list here – 2009 Sauternes

Enjoy! Bill Blatch

Chateau de Malle and a little Sauternes History

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Here’s another but slightly different video to highlight one of the wines in the January Sale.  Chateau de Malle is a ‘monument historique’ or listed building and one of the oldest properties in Sauternes with fantastic gardens that are classified as amongst the notable gardens of France.

I normally go straight to the cellars but here I took time out for a personal tour of the chateau.  I’m very glad I did because I learnt a lot that I didn’t know about the history of the important Sauternes families.  Connections between de Malle, Yquem, Coutet, Filhot and Cadillac also become clear.  Fascinating stuff!

To enable you to sample some of this history we have some fantastic de Malle from the sensational 2009 vintage (bottles and halves), the ‘cool’ natured 2002 vintage (bottles and halves) and the much overlooked, great value and totally ‘evolved’ 1999 vintage (bottles and halves).   Enjoy!  Bill Blatch

2010 Sauternes – Final Top 40
(with Neal Martin’s Wine Advocate scores)

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

It is appropriate that this final 2010 Sauternes Top 40 chart has been compiled after Neal Martin’s scores have been added as he is an avid music fan.  Writing for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Neal’s scores and tasting notes are amongst the most influential for Sauternes – they are available via www.erobertparker.com (subscription required).  Here is the concluding paragraph of his vintage summary:

“How long will this run of successful Sauternes vintages continue? How long can they keep throwing the dice and turning up a six? Denis Dubourdieu’s father reminded his son of the woeful 1960s and 1970s when, in many seasons, nothing could be produced. You never know when such a cycle could return, but they will keep throwing that dice. I recommend stocking up the 2010s and relishing these exceptional Sauternes.”

Also included are some excellent new notes from Chris Kissack (aka The Wine Doctor) and scores from Jean-Marc Quarin (to give the final chart that Eurovision feel!).

To buy any of the wines released so far just click on the links or on the large red box at the top right of your screen.  All links lead to our online shop where all the 2010 Sauternes can be purchased by the case or by the individual bottle/half bottle.  Enjoy!  Bill Blatch

2010 Sauternes Top 40 Chart (now includes
Jancis Robinson scores)

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

There are some big movers this week after scores from Jancis Robinson (log in required), Rene Gabriel (the renowned Swiss German critic) and others.  The chart is settling down a little but there are quite big variations in scores from critic to critic (just click on a wine name to see for yourself).

Why?  Well, different tastes and different samples may account for the variance but I do feel that some just don’t understand Sauternes as well as others and I suspect that for a few Sauternes is a bit of an afterthought when compared to the red wines as it can be with wine merchants and consumers as well.  I hope I am wrong but fear not!

For our part we remain of the opinion that the 2010 vintage is another great vintage – different in style but equally as fine in quality as its predecessor, 2009.  Some of these properties have produced their best wines ever in the last two years and they are still getting indifferent marks – the record seems to be stuck!  Quite why de Fargues, Raymond Lafon and Sigalas Rabaud are being scored so low I cannot understand and no one has recognised, for example, the fantastic progress made by de Malle this year!

See all the scores and tasting notes for yourself by clicking on a wine name –  Enjoy!  Bill Blatch

1. d’Yquem (3) – Up to No. 1!
2. L’Extravagant de Doisy Daene (2) – Down from Number 1 but based on only 3 scores so far (most wines have 6-11 scores averaged out)!
3. Suduiraut (4) – Up One Place!
4. La Tour Blanche (6=) – Up Two Places!
5=. Climens (2),  Guiraud (8) & Rieussec (6=) – Down Three for Climens but still just 2 scores as the wine has to be tasted from barrel – Guiraud & Rieussec Both Up!
8. Coutet (5) – A Faller in the Top Ten – Down 3!
9. Lafaurie-Peyraguey (13) – Up 4 Places – a Big Mover!
