2011 Yquem Tasting

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Great wines bring a smile to my face and I think that’s what is going on here!  Pierre Lurton, Sandrine Garbay, Francis Mayeur and everyone at Yquem can be very proud of their efforts in 2011 – a great team.  Do take a look at this video for an excellent summary of the weather and how it affected the grapes and, ultimately, the wine.  A memorable tasting to lighten up the new tasting room at Yquem.  Enjoy!  Bill Blatch

2011 Climens from barrel

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

I can’t think of many nicer ways to start the day than tasting round the barrels at Climens with owner Berenice Lurton.

And what barrels they are in 2011! The sudden and harmonious onset of botrytis in Barsac has resulted in just 14 lots picked rapidly between the 8th and 28th September. They are all consistently fresh and pure and certainly brightened up my morning – Berenice will not have any problems making a great 2011 Sauternes.  The video below explains the vintage in a little more detail,  Enjoy! 2011 Sauternes Hors d’Oeuvres

Friday, March 30th, 2012

As an antidote to 2011 Red Bordeaux we suggest following Sauternes and dry white Bordeaux (and dry Sauternes) this year. Steve has just arrived in Bordeaux and tomorrow we will taste the 2011’s together and begin to form our opinion on the vintage. At the moment we are cautiously optimistic but time will tell – we start at Climens and Yquem in the morning followed by a mass tasting of all the cru classe at La Tour Blanche and some chateaux hopping.

In the meantime here is an introductory video to set the scene involving a few older vintages, some fishy hors d’ouevres and yours truly. Enjoy! Bill Blatch
