Chateau Coutet 2002

Chateau Coutet – First Growth Barsac

Chateau Coutet, BarsacBill Blatch: This was a lovely year for Sauternes with superb botrytis. Just the summer was not quite hot enough to get the grapes as concentrated as usual before the botrytis arrived. The result is a comparatively “northern”, “Loirey” harder style of fruit and mouthfeel, in spite of the strong sweetness. This Coutet is a fine example of the vintage: tensile, taut, tight and brimming with mineral flavours. I am sure this will age well, rather like a Layon can, but why risk it? It’s so beautiful now.
