2010 Sauternes – Harvest Party at Chateau Guiraud

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

A 2010 Sauternes Harvest Party – what fun!  Everyone at Chateau Guiraud was in high spirits when I popped in a couple of days ago including the inimitable Xavier Planty.  And why not?  It seems like another fantastic vintage for Sauternes – very different to the 2009 and it will be fascinating to compare them over the next few years.  In the video below I join in the party for a while and then manage to drag Xavier away to talk in his cellars about just why this is looking like another very special year.

Next up I shot some vineyard videos (I’ve never seen such colour on the vines) followed by trips to Chateau Coutet, Chateau Suduiraut, Clos Haut-Peyraguey, Domaine de l’Alliance and finally Chateau Climens.  It’ll take Steve a few days to process the videos and get them up here but together they tell the story of the 2010 harvest, and quite an epic it was!  Bill Blatch

Wine Spectator gives 2009 Sauternes an enthusiastic welcome!

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

James Suckling has published his tasting notes and scores for the 2009 Sauternes and Barsac wines at www.winespectator.com   Broadly we agree that this is a fantastic vintage and special congratulations to Chateau d’Yquem (97-100), Coutet, Guiraud, l’Extravagant de Doisy Daene (95-98), de Myrat, Suduiraut (94-97) and Clos Haut-Peyraguey (93-96).

Why not compare them to my notes and to our videos on these wines – just use the name and email sign up boxes and the tag cloud (both in the right hand column of the blog) to locate vidoe reports on the wines you are interested in!  Bill Blatch

I’ve promised Steve that my full tasting notes will be written up very soon so don’t forget to sign up at the top right hand corner of the page if you haven’t already and would like to have them. Bill Blatch

2009 Sauternes Report 2 – February 2010

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I’m trying not to look cold (it was a bit early in the morning) as I make this video for you and report on another days tasting of the 2009 Sauternes vintage.

We visited Clos Haut-Peyraguey, Château d’Yquem, Château de Fargues, Château Guiraud, Château Raymond-Lafon and Château Sigalas-Rabaud. There are some fantastic wines emerging, and some very different styles, it’s exciting stuff.

I also tasted a wine that brought tears to my eyes and when you taste as much as I do, it doesn’t happen often. Watch the video to find out which one it was.
