Wine Spectator gives 2009 Sauternes an enthusiastic welcome!

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

James Suckling has published his tasting notes and scores for the 2009 Sauternes and Barsac wines at   Broadly we agree that this is a fantastic vintage and special congratulations to Chateau d’Yquem (97-100), Coutet, Guiraud, l’Extravagant de Doisy Daene (95-98), de Myrat, Suduiraut (94-97) and Clos Haut-Peyraguey (93-96).

Why not compare them to my notes and to our videos on these wines – just use the name and email sign up boxes and the tag cloud (both in the right hand column of the blog) to locate vidoe reports on the wines you are interested in!  Bill Blatch

2009 Sauternes – First Growths (2 of 2)

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

The brilliance of 2009 Sauternes First Growths continues unabated – Rabaud-Promis, Raymond Lafon, Rieussec, Sigalas-Rabaud, Suduiraut and Clos Haut-Peyraguey! I have never seen anything like this in my 30+ years working in Bordeaux.

If you are interested in buying these wines in the 2009 En Primeur campaign don’t forget to sign up for my full tasting notes at the top right hand corner of the page. PS For those who are wondering we do know that de Fargues and Raymond Lafon aren’t First Growths – we just think they should be! PPS We have also tasted d’Yquem and Climens at the Chateaux and these videos will follow next on this site! Bill Blatch

2007 Sauternes tasting – First Growth Chateaux (2 of 2)

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Second of two videos from the 2007 and 2009 Sauternes and Barsac tasting at Chateau de Fargues covering the last seven out of thirteen 2007 First Growth wines (scroll down for the first video which includes Climens). Yes we know Raymond-Lafon isn’t technically a First growth but we sort of think of it as one.

Other Chateaux in this flight of wines are Clos Haut-Peyraguey, La Tour-Blanche, Rabaud-Promis, Rieussec, Sigalas-Rabaud and Suduiraut. Bill Blatch

Over to some Sauternes châteaux now starting with a fascinating sprint round the barrels at Clos Haut-Peyraguey, 1er Cru Sauternes with the owner, Martine Langlais-Pauly, and her extremely talented young winemaker, Anthony Defives. You really get a feel for the art of the cellar master from this video.

2009 Sauternes Report 2 – February 2010

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I’m trying not to look cold (it was a bit early in the morning) as I make this video for you and report on another days tasting of the 2009 Sauternes vintage.

We visited Clos Haut-Peyraguey, Château d’Yquem, Château de Fargues, Château Guiraud, Château Raymond-Lafon and Château Sigalas-Rabaud. There are some fantastic wines emerging, and some very different styles, it’s exciting stuff.

I also tasted a wine that brought tears to my eyes and when you taste as much as I do, it doesn’t happen often. Watch the video to find out which one it was.
