Decanter praises 2009 Sauternes

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Well the praise for 2009 Sauternes just gets better and better!  Decanter magazine’s, Michel Bettane has this to say about the vintage as a whole:

The wines are reminiscent of the 1990 vintage with more body and definition, or for older growers, 1949 and 1921. The overall level of my tasting marks is unmatched.

Comments for individual wines are positively glowing and include:

Raymond Lafon – Glorious wine, as great as any first growth.

d’Yquem – For me the most formally perfect Sauternes of the vintage and a glorious affirmation of the property’s new style.

Sigalas-Rabaud – An absolute classical Haut-Bommes wine.

Suduiraut – Is it the best since 1899 or 1928? I say yes.

And that’s just a small sample!  For Michel’s full notes visit and don’t forget to compare his comments to mine!  To get a copy of my full notes just enter your name and email at the top right hand corner of this screen.  Bill Blatch

2009 Sauternes – First Growths (2 of 2)

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

The brilliance of 2009 Sauternes First Growths continues unabated – Rabaud-Promis, Raymond Lafon, Rieussec, Sigalas-Rabaud, Suduiraut and Clos Haut-Peyraguey! I have never seen anything like this in my 30+ years working in Bordeaux.

If you are interested in buying these wines in the 2009 En Primeur campaign don’t forget to sign up for my full tasting notes at the top right hand corner of the page. PS For those who are wondering we do know that de Fargues and Raymond Lafon aren’t First Growths – we just think they should be! PPS We have also tasted d’Yquem and Climens at the Chateaux and these videos will follow next on this site! Bill Blatch

2007 Sauternes tasting – First Growth Chateaux (2 of 2)

Monday, March 29th, 2010

Second of two videos from the 2007 and 2009 Sauternes and Barsac tasting at Chateau de Fargues covering the last seven out of thirteen 2007 First Growth wines (scroll down for the first video which includes Climens). Yes we know Raymond-Lafon isn’t technically a First growth but we sort of think of it as one.

Other Chateaux in this flight of wines are Clos Haut-Peyraguey, La Tour-Blanche, Rabaud-Promis, Rieussec, Sigalas-Rabaud and Suduiraut. Bill Blatch

2009 Sauternes – Château Sigalas-Rabaud

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

The talented Laure De Lambert Des Granges is our guide here for a tasting of her 2009 Château Sigalas-Rabaud, Premier Cru Sauternes. Laure plays a typical winemaker’s joke on me towards the end of this video – they are always trying to catch me out and Laure succeeds this time!

2009 Sauternes Report 2 – February 2010

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I’m trying not to look cold (it was a bit early in the morning) as I make this video for you and report on another days tasting of the 2009 Sauternes vintage.

We visited Clos Haut-Peyraguey, Château d’Yquem, Château de Fargues, Château Guiraud, Château Raymond-Lafon and Château Sigalas-Rabaud. There are some fantastic wines emerging, and some very different styles, it’s exciting stuff.

I also tasted a wine that brought tears to my eyes and when you taste as much as I do, it doesn’t happen often. Watch the video to find out which one it was.
