Great Drinking Sauternes!

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Well here it is – our first offer of drinking Sauternes!  We’ve scoured the cellars of Bordeaux to find the very best value wines and have come up with some truly great Sauternes.

All except one of these wines are cheaper per bottle than buying the recent 2009 vintage (some are only one third of the price) – and you don’t have to wait ten years to see them at their best!  The 2009 Sauternes may well turn out to be the best ever vintage but these wines represent the very best value Sauternes that you can drink today.  We’re delighted to make this offer of

Best Buy Sauternes For Drinking Now

Even better, you can buy your Sauternes either by the whole case or have fun mixing your own bespoke selection!

Why not slip in a half bottle or two of d’Yquem alongside some great value de Myrat and La Tour Blanche?  The de Myrat is cheaper than most own label supermarket Sauternes and, quite frankly, is three times the wine!

All the Sauternes have been perfectly stored in Bordeaux cellars and will be shipped to the UK for delivery in late October in plenty of time for Christmas (if they last you that long!)

Some of these wines are simply not available anywhere else in the UK so don’t miss this opportunity to grab them while you can.

We hope you enjoy this offer and these sensational Sauternes.  Bill Blatch

Jancis Robinson publishes 2009 Sauternes tasting notes

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Jancis Robinson MW has joined the praise for the 2009 Sauternes vintage and published her tasting notes  in her Purple Pages at  We are grateful again for a mention of this site – thank you!  Snippets from the notes I found particularly pleasing amongst many were:

Climens – Great blend of richness, raciness and life. This should be very special indeed and I may be under-scoring it.  18.5+ points

Doisy Daene – Very big and bold, like pear juice fermented by a wizard. Lovely stuff.  18 points

Guiraud – I failed to spit this one – always a good sign. Very long and a good combination of structure, acidity and very ripe fruit.  18 points

Raymond Lafon – Great stuff! Unspittable, dried apricots (though so much richer than a Tokaji) and great acidity.  19 points

Suduiraut – Big and rich and bold and overwhelming almost. A bit of spice and so much sugar!  18.5 points

Don’t forget to compare her comments to mine!  To get a copy of my full notes just enter your name and email at the top right hand corner of this screen.  Bill Blatch

2009 Sauternes – l’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Last of three videos from Denis Dubourdieu of Château Doisy-Daëne talking this time about his extraordinary wine l’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne. Only Denis knows how to get yeasts to work at high sugar levels and, at the same time, retain his trademark freshness.

Next up some more Barsac wines, Doisy-Védrines, Nairac, Liot and La Clotte-Cazalis. Bill Blatch

Denis Dubourdieu on 2009 Château Doisy-Daëne

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

This is the second of three videos featuring Sauternes wine expert Denis Dubourdieu (see Château Cantegril below). This time we taste and discuss his more famous Barsac wine, Château Doisy-Daëne.

The next video will cover the extraordinary l’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne. Bill Blatch

2009 Sauternes – a great vintage?

Friday, March 5th, 2010

So, is the 2009 Sauternes vintage a great one? It is of course much too early to make any such claims – the wines are still in barrel. However, we spent last Saturday in Barsac with Denis Dubourdieu of Château Doisy Daëne and Nicolas Heeter-Tari of Château Nairac and both had some interesting insights into 2009 in Sauternes and Barsac.

We had a great lunch too at Nairac and were introduced to an interesting new style of Sauternes wine which might just catch on.

I did this video all by myself (as you can see!). Bill Blatch
