New Sauternes Gold Star Scoring System

I’ve always resisted scoring Sauternes – to me it feels a bit like judging one’s family.  Steve has convinced me, however, that some form of judgement would make your life a lot easier and I completely understand that it can be difficult to make sense of some of my ramblings on Sauternes!

So – we’ve invented a new system for scoring Sauternes which gets over some of the problems associated with the traditional 100 or 20 point systems.  In the Gold Star System wines are scored out of 10g2 New Sauternes Gold Star Scoring System for Year, Wine and Value giving a maximum of 30g3 New Sauternes Gold Star Scoring System.

Our aim is for the system to explain a wine more clearly to readers and also to give guidance to producers on how to improve their overall offer.  In short we hope the system is a constructive contribution.  For a fuller explanation of the system click here – Gold Star Scoring System

We will be trialling the system for the 2011 vintage – do let us know what you think.  Don’t forget to read the notes too though!  Bill Blatch

Bill, for this to work, I need to see (at least at this stage), vintage rankings for at least 1997, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2010. I realise you don’t have time at the moment to go back and rank all the wines, but your rank of 8* for 2011 immediately raised a question in my mind, as many have described it as the best vintage since 2001: does that mean you consider 2005, 2009, and 2010 as 7*? Fine if you do, but I’d just like to know that is the comparison being made. Else you might like to refine it with +/- ie. 2009 8*, 2010, 8*, 2011 8*+ (which would still be a lower grade than 9*-).

Hi Mark – Steve here. Bill and I did sit down and give every vintage a score back to the 1920s but we want to take a little time to consider them more closely before publishing. At the moment we are ranking 2011 alongside 2010, 2007, 1997, 1990, 1988 and 1983 from recent vintages. 2009, 2005 and 1989 we consider deserve an extra star and 2001 one on top of that. This could change, especially as the recent vintages mature a little. Hope this helps.
