2010 Sauternes – barrel and prototype tastings
What a day yesterday was – 38 2010 Sauternes tastings completed including Ch d’Yquem, every first growth and a whole host of second growths and up and coming wines representing great value for money. It wasn’t easy though! It is a great vintage but it is harder than most to put into perspective.
I have locked Steve in my dining room with a half bottle of 2002 Suduiraut processing all the video footage we shot yesterday but, before we publish my individual video notes for every wine, I wanted to put something online to try and explain just why expert advice is critical in 2010. I promise not to bore you with too many barrel sample videos but I encourage you to take a look at the one from Clos Haut-Peyraguey below. It is nearly 20 minutes long so make sure you have time on your side. In it you will see me at work, probing the owner and wine-maker about their wine and exploring the different lots to try and make sense of the sample that all the experts will be tasting and scoring. I hope you will appreciate and understand that it is not as simple as wine ‘x’ = ‘y’ points after viewing this video.
There is also a much shorter video from Raymond Lafon, our best selling 2009 Sauternes, where Jean-Pierre Meslier talks about his 2010 prototype blend – his enthusiasm for the vintage is clear for all to see. Next up will be the results from our first comparative tastings of all the 2010 Sauternes and Barsac wines. Bill Blatch
