Chateau d’Arche 1996
Chateau d’Arche – 2nd Growth Sauternes
Bill Blatch: I don’t often say this because it is against my Sauternes principles, but here is the perfect pudding wine : all softness and sweetness, with a sort of globular mouthfeel that coats the palate and imparts all the fatness and glycerine that a good Sauternes can yield, especially when it is at maturity like this. This is a fat, spicey wine, the spice probably coming from what used to be new oak flavours that have settled into the honeyed Doisy Daene type of botrytis of the fruit and combined to form a luscious, very Sémillon harmony.
